Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that can dramatically improve the shape or contours of the body. Most of us have at least one of those areas we’d like to see contoured. If you have subcutaneous fat that you can pinch or grab, that area can be contoured by liposuction.

You can use liposuction to treat nearly any area of fat on your body, including:

  • Abdomen and waistline
  • Hips
  • Mid back fat
  • Low back (flank)
  • Arms
  • Calves
  • Chin (submental)
  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs

Your fat distribution is unique to you as an individual, so the team caters your liposuction procedure to your needs. The process begins with a consultation at Meadows Plastic Surgery at which you and your surgeon discuss your goals.

What are the different types of liposuction offered?

The team at Meadows Plastic Surgery uses different types of liposuction at the offices, including AquaShape™ by bodyjet®, power-assisted liposuction (traditional), and laser liposuction.

AquaShape by bodyjet

AquaShape™ by bodyjet® is a minimally invasive liposuction procedure with minimal downtime, minimal incisions, and zero scarring. Unlike with other methods of liposuction, you don’t need to go under general anesthesia to have a comfortable experience. The team uses local anesthesia to numb your specified treatment area, then makes a small incision, so you’re back to work in 3-4 days.

During the liposuction procedure, a tumescent (numbing) solution is infused into the area being treated. The AquaShape device uses pulsating water pressure to loosen your fat cells. Simultaneously, the device uses a suctioning effect to remove the dislodged fat cells via tiny incisions, resulting in a better overall body contour. Your surgical team may keep the fat cells and process them for a fat transfer to your buttocks or other areas that need more volume if you specify that you’d like to do so.

Power-assisted liposuction

The team also offers power-assisted liposuction, which is performed using a special tool that is hooked up to an electric motor or compressed air that provides a spinning rotation to remove fat like a vacuum.

Laser liposuction

During laser-assisted liposuction, a local anesthetic is used to numb the target site. A tiny cannula is then inserted under the skin with a laser attached to it, and a laser beam is used to melt the fats in the selected area. Along with the fat-melting benefits, the laser also helps reduce swelling and bleeding, and can be used in almost any area of the body.

Each liposuction procedure at Meadows Plastic Surgery also includes an ultrasound/e-stim post-operative deep-tissue massage (SMARTSOUND) and lymph drainage treatments.

Does liposuction hurt?

Liposuction with Aquashape doesn’t hurt because of the local anesthesia. The device works very gently, so you don’t see as much bruising or swelling as you do with traditional liposuction procedures, either.

You might feel some soreness as the anesthesia wears off, but it isn’t usually enough to impede your day. In fact, many patients are able to return to their typical daily activities right after their liposuction procedure at Meadows Plastic Surgery. Of course, each case is different, and your surgical team helps you decide what’s best in your case.

How quickly will I see my results?

Liposuction results are seen immediately after surgery. However, there is a period of swelling and post-operative healing that occurs over 3-6 weeks, and it ultimately takes six months to see the final results. Patients usually begin enjoying their new contoured body after about one month.

Your experienced plastic surgeon will provide you with a compression garment to wear for two weeks after your liposuction procedure. In most cases, you will go down in size and require a much smaller secondary garment for weeks three and four.

You will be able to maintain your new curves with a healthy diet and exercise.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction isn’t the best option for everyone. You must sit down for a consultation during which you and your physician decide together whether or not you should get it. Good candidates for liposuction are:

  • At or close to their goal weight
  • At a stable weight
  • Nonsmokers
  • Optimistic about their outlook

During your consultation, your physician can also help you decide whether or not to get other procedures along with your liposuction. Many patients use the removed fat for Brazilian butt lifts and other fat transfers for a curvier figure.
